Football in Mostar. How to get tickets to watch Zrinjski Mostar

I love travelling, I love football, so if I get the chance to watch football while travelling, it's like a senses overload.

I didn't come to Mostar with watching football on my mind, it was their World Heritage bridges and beautiful scenery that first piqued my interest. On my way here though, I of course took a look if there were any local teams, and if they were playing during my stay.

I actually found out that there are not one, but two football teams in Mostar. Zrinjski Mostar and FK Velez, and goodness me, it is a BIG rivalry. I'm no stranger to a heated football derby, as Cardiff City (who I first watched over 30 years ago) and South Wales neighbours Swansea do not get along.

This interesting article explains a bit more on why there is such a rivalry between the two Mostar sides. There is plenty of graffiti in Mostar showing support for both sides, but in this article I will share how to get tickets for Zrinjski Mostar, as that was the game I went to.

How do I get tickets for Zrinjski Mostar games?

It was super simple to get tickets for the game, all I did was go to the club shop the day before the match, and I purchased it there. Zrinjski were playing NK Široki Brijeg and it was actually their first home league game of the season.

You can also buy tickets at the stadium on the day, so let me talk you through both options.

Buying tickets at the fan shop:

I saw on their Instagram page that you were able to buy tickets at the fan shop, so my recommendation would be to check this as well before going to buy yours.

When you're at the crossroads by Mepas Mall, you'll be able to spot the fan shop

The Zrinjski fan shop is easy to find, just a minute or two from the Mepas Mall and here's what it looks like from the outside:

I just went inside, went to the counter, and that was that! You're given an old school style paper ticket, and then you just scan the ticket code at the turnstiles when you arrive at the stadium.

Buying tickets at the stadium:

You are also able to buy tickets at the stadium on matchday, or at least you were for this match. If you walk to the main entrance of the stadium (shown below), then the ticket booth is just slightly to the right up the hill.

Here's where you can buy tickets on a matchday for Zrinjski Mostar:

How much were the tickets?

I paid 10 Bosnian Marks (£4.41 / €5.11 / $5.95) which felt incredibly reasonable. When you buy your tickets, I chose to sit in sector B, and you're not given a seat number or row, it looks like you can just sit wherever you like.

I got to the ground pretty early, and this was my view:

What are the facilities like?

There is only one main stand at the moment, as they are rebuilding the other side. The one stand they have is very impressive though, and I was sat in the bottom tier (I don't believe the top tier was open). The stadium felt like it had a bit of history which was nice, as so many stadiums these days are incredibly similar.

The seats were a little bit grubby, and some people near me brought seat covers, or newspaper to sit on.

What are the food and drink options?

Food wise, I could only see popcorn and nut mixes on sale, but drinks wise, there were lots of options. Here is the price list, and I got a water and coke for 5KM in total, which is very good for a football ground.

They actually have vendors that walk around for the whole match, and will come to you if you want a drink or food. It mostly seemed to be beer that these vendors were selling, but if you are a drinker, then you won't have to leave your seat.

In the UK, you're not even allowed to have a beer in view of the pitch, so seeing people actively come to you to sell you beer was slightly surreal.

What was the match like?

I won't lie to you, not great. It finished 0-0, and there wasn't much quality on show. Zrinjski hit the post, but the opposition, Siroki Brijeg might have had the biggest chances. Shout out the Zrinjski goalkeeper Goran Karačić who was excellent throughout.

Was there a good atmosphere?

There was! The Zrinjski ultras are situated in Sector A, so right next to where I was in Sector B. They sing throughout, there are drummers etc, and I was impressed that despite the result, they kept on singing after the game was over.

I have no idea what they were signing about, but they were very vocal, and it meant the energy kept at a good level throughout. The fans where I was sat were mostly quiet, except when complaining about a missed opportunity. Towards the end though, I think the Ultras asked for the whole stadium to stand up, everything then went eerily quiet, before a wall of noise as they tried to get their team over the line.

That was a cool moment.

How full was the stadium?

As mentioned, I was able to get a ticket with no issue, and while the lower tier was pretty full, it looked like there were still plenty of tickets, so I'd imagine that you'd have no problem picking some up during your Mostar visit (the only exception might be the Mostar derby).

Final thoughts:

If you're in Mostar, and you're a football fan, then it's a no brainer to go watch the game if you get the chance and the dates align. The tickets are cheap, food and drink is also super reasonable, and the atmosphere was good.

Extras:

If you are a tourist in Mostar who uses Revolut, then this is the only ATM I found that doesn't charge a super high fee.

And if you find yourself in Madeira, here's how to get tickets for the two sides who play there, Maritimo and Nacional.

Enjoy your Mostar football experience, and let me know how you found it in the comments or via a message!
