Grounding mat for pets - can it help your cat or dog?

I started using a Grounding Mat just over a year ago. It works for me, and as a result, it is a piece of kit I make room for as I continue my travels around the world.

Back in Wales, at the family home, we have a wonderful cat, who goes by the name of Messi (yes, he’s named after arguably the greatest footballer of all time). We got Messi as a rescue cat, and I’m not sure what his life was like before we got him, but to say he was anxious on arrival would be an understatement.

I think I was away when he was first introduced, but my mum kept me updated, and I believe for the first few weeks, he lived under the bed. He was so nervous, and so overwhelmed, that the only time he would leave his safe space was to get food and use the bathroom when everyone had gone to bed. 

He has gotten better over time, becoming much more affectionate, and he’s not as afraid to be around people as he once was. As mentioned at the top of this post, I have had the Grounding Well bedsheet for over a year, and I like to believe that this has played a big part in making our anxious cat feel much more relaxed.

Messi is an indoor cat, because he was rescued not far from where we live, and there is a danger he could head back to that spot, so he doesn’t get to really experience authentic grounding. He lives in the house, so even things like touching the grass aren’t a part of his life, due to the risk of him running away.

The grounding sheet has moved beds over the years, but Messi has gravitated towards where it is, as documented in some of these adorable photos below.

On my mum’s bed, the sheet is under the duvet, but Messi will often head to where it is, and lay on top of the grounding sheet in that particular section of the bed. On my brother’s bed, the sheet has been on top of the quilt, and our cat is sleeping on it a ridiculous amount. The sheet on my brother’s bed has been a recently new addition, and my mum has noticed the difference it has made in helping our cat’s anxiety. 

Around this time of year, as is the case with lots of cats, he can be more nervous. There is Halloween, quickly followed by Bonfire Night and all the fireworks that brings, and then Christmas rolls around. I was curious to see if direct contact with a grounding sheet would help our cat, and based on this message received from my mum, it definitely is:

‘The direct contact is most definitely helping and he’s much calmer than he has been for a while.’

As mentioned, our cat was the poster boy for anxiety in pets, so I really believe that a Grounding Mat or Grounding Bedsheet can help your anxious animal, feel better. Messi is light years away from where he was, and while some of that will just be the result of him feeling more comfortable in his surroundings, the results seem to suggest that the Grounding products we have, help him.
